Lunch On Us?

Yes it's true.  Adrian and I have been talking about getting together with a couple of you once a month for lunch to discuss life, biz, the web, social media...you name it.  It's time to get off our wallets and out from behind our computers more and have a great face to face conversation with you!

So we've decided to host a few lunch dates in Saint John and the surrounding area over the coming few months to explore this concept.  We are looking forward to sharing some of what we've learned over the years, as well as to learn a thing or two from you.

Picture a few passionate individuals talking over a great meal (and maybe a glass of wine or two :-) ). Lunch is on us, of course.

Interested in joining us? Leave a comment below and add what you would like to discuss (first-come, first-served; We are thinking 4 of us at each lunch).  The first lunch will be at Opera Bistro in Saint John on Friday July 9th at 12:30. http://www.operabistro.com

Are you up for some great food and conversation?

4 Ways To Build Social Currency

The other day I wrote a post about 5 ways to deepen your relationships in a tough economy.  Heck, doesn't matter if it's a good or bad economy, you should always think about ways to deepen your relationships.  Today I am going to put a bit of a social media spin on why it is important to deepen your relationships via social media, which will in turn build and nurture your social currency.

What is Social Currency?  You can click the link to see the definition on Wikipedia, or you can read my take on it.  To me social currency is when people share information about a product, service or company as part of their everyday lives.  As a business owner in today's world, I think building your social currency should definitely be on your radar.  Think about companies like JetBlue, BMW and Apple they all have social currency that creates value and loyalty amongst their fans.  Building social currency is probably the most important investment companies can make to create value for themselves. Customers will benefit as well as they increasingly participate in social platforms, and use social technologies.  Businesses can stimulate the creation of social currency through means that cultivate a sense of community, strengthen consumer interaction and provide value to the community. When done right, you will earn their trust.

So how do you build social currency for your business?  Here are four ways I think will help get you started:

  1. Create a sense of community - The value of your brand is closely related to the affiliation and sense of community it creates among other like minded people. You can create value by promoting the community and building exchange opportunities.  Soon, some businesses will be creating social businesses where customers come for community and not just to buy your product.
  2. Engage in the conversations - Some of your customers proactively talk about your products and services with others. By engaging in these conversations, you can stimulate further conversations and discussions by providing additional talking points, perspectives and points of view.  Social media conversations are dialogues and even “multi-logues” where others listen to your 1-on-1 conversations.
  3. Create ambassadors for your brand - Customers are willing to tell others about your product/service or recommend it further. Creating ambassadors is one of the key value drivers.  By reaching out to those who know you best, giving them the mechanisms and motivations to share in ownership of your brand, you set in motion a series of events that can take a group of people who use your product or service and transform them into a passionate army of brand ambassadors who essentially market your brand for you.
  4. Identity - Customers develop a strong sense of identity and an ability to express themselves to others by using your product/service.  What elements of your business can help reinforce your identity with your customers.  The best social media programs take the online world and move it to the offline world.

Businesses who adopt the new processes and tools in building social currency will prosper in today’s age of digital and social revolution and have a chance of creating new levels of business performance.

What are you doing to increase your social currency?

Do You Love Your Website?

I thought it would be fun to expand on a recent post I did about "4 Simple Web Tools For Your Small Biz".  To recap, I highlighted four tools that could help your business thrive on the web.  Number 1 was your website.  Are you giving your website the love it needs?  I hope so.  As of today, it is still the most important part of your business's web presence.  It's your home base.

Almost all businesses have a website now, but the majority of them just have a website because someone told them they should have one.  So they slapped a website online without any thought.  Now they have this static website that is really not doing them any good, especially the way people use the web today.  Are you one of those folks?

So for fun, lets pull up your website right now.  Look at it.  Now I want you to ask yourself this:

What do I want people to do when they reach my website?

This is the the most important question to think about when putting together your website.  Do you want people to know who you are, what you do, to contact you, find new leads?  Maybe it is all of the above.  Figure out what you want and then work backwards.

So now you have your goals.  Now what will make your website stand out from the rest?  I think there are three areas you need to focus on.

3.  Keep it simple.  I know I say that all the time, but just think about the sites you like to visit most.  I bet the majority of them are nice and simple and easy to navigate.
2.  Master the home page.  Your home page should answer all of the questions a potential visitor might have when they land on your site.
1.  What is the best way visitors can reach you?  Make it easy for your customers or potential customers to contact you.  Email, phone, social media sites like twitter, facebook, linkedin, blog.

There ya have it.  Now they know who you are and where to find you.  Next is getting them to engage with you online and share that conversation online with others.  How do we do that? Can you say, blog?

Location, Location, Location

How many times have you heard that phrase?  Whether it is your banker or Donald Trump telling you, location is one of the most important things to remember when investing in real estate or opening a storefront business.

Well guess what?  That phrase is now coming to the Internet and mobile phones.  I know, you are saying, Chris, what the heck are you talking about.  How can location be important when I am on my mobile phone.  Well it is hear and it looks like it is the next big thing.  Remember Facebook?  Remember Twitter?  Well remember this name....Gowalla.

Gowalla is a location-based social networking game that launched in March 2009. Gowalla uses a large catalog of virtual goods to encourage its users to go places and meet people.  Here is a quick video on how Gowalla works.

Over the weekend I watched a video by Kevin Rose, founder of Digg and WeFollow. Rose also co-founded Revision3, and Pownce (acquired by Six Apart).  Kevin goes into great detail on how he sees the power in apps. like Gowalla and Foursquare

Here is the video.

A few things I picked up from his video:
  1. Location based tools are very hot with early adopters right now.  Just like Twitter and Facebook were.
  2. Building a massive CRM database for all businesses, with a very power referral engine.
  3. Gowalla uses GPS, so you don't even have to type in the location, it knows you are there.
  4. Great way to see where your friends are without even calling or texting.
  5. Businesses can really promote special deals and reward people who visit their location often.
  6. Unlike Twitter where you share knowledge, Gowalla you actually share physical locations with friends.
Now, being from little old, Saint John, NB, I have to admit I have not tried Gowalla or Foursquare yet.  But, I will definitely give one of them a whirl.

Will you or do you use one of them?  Do you see one of these being the next Twitter?

4 "Simple Web Tools" For Your Small Biz

I know, not another list of social media/web tools for your business.  Well, sorry, it is another one, but this is "my list". :-)  My simple recipe will make your life easier and your business will thrive on the web.  So here we go:

1.  Website

Yes, you still need a website, but your website needs to be flexible.  It will most likely consist of static content, but it needs to move with you and it needs to work nicely with the next three tools I am going to mention.  So when you select a web provider, make sure they can integrate some social media tools with your branded website, so the conversation online is seamless to the customer.  I think I know of someone who can help with that :-)

2.  Blog

You don't have one?  Well get on it!  Blogging doesn't have to be that time consuming.  Pick a medium: video, audio or written and start your own blog.  Figure out what you want to do with your blog and your blog will become your conversation piece online with your customers.  I am going to recommend Posterous as the platform you use.  They make things simple for posting and sharing with other websites.  As a business owner that is what you want.  Note: Depending on your business, number 1 and number 2 can be one.

3.  Twitter

Yes you need to be on Twitter.  Sign up for a personal account, search for folks you want to communicate with, add your customers and promote your customers on Twitter.  Think of it like you would when going to a cocktail party and meeting new people.  Interact like you would there.  First listen and when asked to speak, talk like you would at the party.  When asked to speak I talk about my family, Evolving Solutions, and The Hockey Zen

4.  Facebook Fan Page

It's the best way to get people on the web to talk about your business.  It truly is Word of Mouth on steroids.  You add something to your fan page and other people comment on it and that then shows up in their activity which is then seen by their friends.  Pretty powerful stuff.  My most recent post I shared some Facebook tips.  Check it out.  In the meantime here are some folks who are doing a good job at engaging their FB fans- Shaq, NHLDigest and The Feel Good Store.

Give these tools a try to help simplify your web conversations while getting more exposure with half the effort. Reach more clients, free up more time and stay organized. Once you start using these tools, you’ll never know how you got along without them!

The Internet Makes Stuff Happen

I have two perfect examples of what the Internet can do for you.  What I am calling the Internet, some people may refer to it as social media or web 2.0.  It really doesn't matter, I just want to show to examples of some "stuff" that happened to me the other day that would of never happened without the Internet.

Number 1

On Wednesday I decided to show my appreciation for my wife and cook supper for the family.  It was late in the afternoon and I needed a quick and simple recipe.  Cooking is not one of my forte so that is why it needed to be simple. :-)  So I figured, why not ask for a recipe on twitter?  So I did.

Here are some instant responses I received from some of the great folks I follow.

All the responses I received were great, but I decided to go with the one from Tyler.  The recipe was very simple and the family loved it.  The kids even had seconds.  Thanks Tyler.  I also got another tip for the recipe aftewards from Justin at The Hockey Card Show.  The same recipe works in a crockpot!

Number 2

This next example is how the Internet can empower collaboration.  As you know, my bro Adrian and I have our own hockey tv show over at The Hockey Zen.  We recently finished our 2nd mashup video with Keith Korneluk and Chris Kaliszewski from Kingscast the other day and it was a great experience to collaborate on a project with two other passionate hockey fans.  The crazy thing here is Keith and Chris do not live in Saint John, NB, but they live in LA!  I know they would probably like to move to Saint John, since our winters are much warmer. :-)

Now if you had of asked me a year ago that we would be working on a mashup video show with two dudes from LA, I would of said you were crazy.  But we did and it all happened because of the Internet.  How cool is that?  We are planning to do many more mashups and I must say they are a blast to do.  Check out our latest one below and let me know what you think.  And yes, I am losing "The Bet"

Don't be afraid to step out of your local network and see who else you can meet via the Internet.  They may even help you out some day.
