4 Things I Learned From The Olympic Athletes

The Games dominated my life for the past two weeks, so I thought it would be great to reflect on what I have learned over the last two weeks.  Here are 4 things that stand out to me:

1.  Passion - Follow it and do it.  Clara Hughes said it best after she won bronze in the 5000M.  I love skating and it has done so much for me.  The best thing parents can do is let children follow their interest at a young age.

2.  Work Hard - Watching all the athletes perform at the Olympics, you can see the effort as they stretch for that finish line, or dive to make a play.  Every ounce of energy is being put forth to do their best and reach their goal.  None of them are an overnight success, even though it may look like it.

3.  Be thankful - Be thankful for those that have helped you get to where you are.  We are kidding ourselves if we think we can do everything on our own.  All of the athletes were very thankful and grateful for those who helped them get to where they are.

4.  Be in the momemt - Alexandre Bilodeau said it best after making history and winning Canada's first Gold Medal on home soil, "I had no regrets on what I've done the last four years." He knew, he said, he could go for the gold, and "what will happen, will happen."

What did you learn from the athletes?  Can we take the same characteristics and adapt them to every day life?  I think so.

I will leave you with a quote:

When you go after what you want, with love and wild abandon, you tap into the energy that created the stars and the seas.  A kind of magic begins to enter your life and things happen that defy your comprehension.  Signs start to appear, suggesting that you are on the right track -- Daily Inspiration, Robin Shamra

How are you following the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games?

Considered to be the first ever digital games, the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games are providing us with a multitude of ways to follow the games.  Unlike ever before, the Vancouver Olympics will be subject to widespread coverage from web media both from official and non-official sources. For the first time, every second of every event will be streamed live online at CTVOlympics.ca offering the home viewer the ability to watch any event they choose.

So after day 1, I thought it would be neat to share how I am consuming the games so far and would love to hear how you are.

Here is a list of the mediums I am using to stay up to date:
  1. CTV/TSN - CTV/TSN, have joined forces to cover the Olympics on TV.  Even though I spend most of my time on the web, the TV has been on CTV since the Olympics started.  I know that is not great for the environment, but I want to cheer my country on and this is the best way for me to do that.  Also, watching the games with the my wife and young kids has been a great experience thus far.  CTV has also set up a site where you can catch the latest scores, news and select video coverage of the competitions.
  2. Twitter - Like all newsworthy events, Twitter is a great source for up to date information on what is happening at the Olympics.  It was Twitter where I found out about the unfortunate death of the Georgian luger.  There is even a dedicated website for the athletes at the Olympics who are on Twitter.
  3. Facebook - Similar to Twitter, I find a great source of information on the games via Facebook's news feed.  There is also a Vancouver 2010 Fan Page that has some great photos and inside Olympic information.
There you have it, the three ways I have been following the games so far.  How are you following the games?  Anyone following the games via their mobile phone?  If so, please share how.
