How do you start your day?


Before you read this post you might enjoy listening to some good old Tragically Hip, Wheat Kings while you read this post.

I never used to really think about how I started my day until I read Robin Sharma's book, The Greatness Guide.  After I read the book, I realized that if I want to be great, the start of my day is very important to setting the tone for the rest of my day.  One thing that Robin really made a point of was joining the 5AM club.  His philosophy is that in order to lead a great life you should treat your body like a temple and getting up early and exercising, mediating, reading etc are things you should try to do when you first awake.  It's been almost 3 years since I read The Greatness Guide and I thought I would share with you how I start most of my mornings.

First of all, I haven't cracked the 5 AM club yet, but I do get up at 5:15.  

Take care of your temple - 5:15 AM until 7 AM
  • Brush my teeth - Can't start the day without doing that :-)
  • Wake up my lovely wife to join me in our exercise for the day.  
  • From 5:30 to 7 we do one of the following - Yoga, p90x (just completed our first 13 week session at Christmas) etc.
  • I try to meditate at least twice a week after our workout session for 10-15 mins.
  • 6:45 to 7 the little rascals start to stir.
Kiddie time - 7 AM until 7:45 AM
  • Quick scan of emails, make sure there is nothing pressing, delete garbage.
  • Get our oldest ready to catch his bus at 7:35 and youngest ready for the day.
  • Take oldest to the bus.
Smoothie time - 7:45 AM until 8:15AM
  • I prepare our breakfast, which is a Jamie Oliver smoothie recipe.  
  • After we have our smoothie, it's coffee time and time for work.
Here is the smoothie recipe if you would like to try it.

1 banana
1 glass full of frozen fruit ( I like strawberries, blueberries and raspberry)
1 handful of oats
1 handful of nuts ( I use almonds)
1 glass of milk or soy milk
1 teaspoon of honey
2 tablespoons of plain yogurt

Note - I usually add a tangerine for some Vitamin C.  Enjoy!
