Does social media work in small cities?

Here is a little case study a tried while visiting Fredericton, NB today.  Can you see the value if you are a business owner?

Great case study. I think you can also add foursquare and Gowalla to the mix. By offering discounts to the Mayor and or doing special things with Gowalla you can find out the demographics of your customer and they can feel appreciated when they come in.

Interesting story there, Chris. If you're in food service, you NEED to be in social media. I don't care if you're in Antartica where you're customer base is five scientists. The smaller your community, the more you need to be involved.

If I'm a coffee shop or restaurant in a small town, I have several searches in TweetDeck that targets guys like you who are looking for some internet and some nosh.

You ought to target those two places as new clients!

Jamie, both locations are on Foursquare, as I checked in at both. But you hit the nail on the head. They need to use the location based networks to generate more business

Great site!  Businesses should really look at how artists and musicians use social media.  Thanks for sharing!

My pleasure! What I find interesting is the fact that I'm not from Fredericton, so I alos look for places that have WiFi and coffee when I'm there. Also, I did find Relish on Twitter (http://twitter.com/relishus).

Chris, absolutely! Every business should utilize social media. At a bare minimum, they need a website, blog, Twitter, Facebook and, if it has a retail front, a presence on Foursquare and (to a lesser degree) Gowalla.

It's amazing that key decision makers in various industries still don't get it. The playing field is becoming more level than it ever has. If you want to be successful, you have to step up! The good news: it's free and you can do it yourself.

Good discussion!
